Freedom United is a Stop Slavery Campaigns Award finalist, respected for our ability to mobilize supporters and build power through digital campaigns bolstering our partner organizations’ efforts and resulting in real change for a world in which slavery no longer thrives. We are recognised for our My Story, My Dignity campaign, and for highlighting the links between prison systems, consumerism, safe migration and modern slavery.

4 days (32 hours) per week (on-going contract) starting August 2024.

Location: Remote, working hours must include 9am-1pm Eastern Time, a minimum of 4 days a week.

Freedom United harnesses the power of its community to influence social, business and political change. Freedom United is a digital-first organization that works closely with partner organizations and experts in the field to build strong, effective online campaigns and engaging copy to mobilize our supporters to take action, to ensure decision-makers around the world take action to end modern slavery.

The Community Engagement Officer will report to the Advocacy Manager and will lead ensuring we’re best serving our community, creating engaging content in written, graphic and video form, and bringing in new people, to progress our campaigns on a broad range of modern slavery issues. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a small team focused on using the latest in digital campaigning, working with activists, people and partners around the world, to help build a stronger, and more powerful movement.

Postholder attributes:  The postholder’s experience is not as important as their ability to meet the essential attributes listed below, in particular generating creative, engaging content in written, graphic and video format.

Essential:

– A proven passion for creative digital engagement
– Confidence in an array of digital tools
– Applies creative thinking in producing videos, graphics, and writing
– An eye for design
– Attention to detail and enthusiasm for getting things just right
– Strong written communication skills to engage new and existing support
– A demonstrated self-starter who executes ideas in a range of categories
– Proactive in keeping informed of trends, news, and developments
– Strong teamwork ethic
– Flexibility; quick learning; logical thinking; timely problem solving; organised; and highly values integrity
– Understanding of and commitment to our mission ending modern slavery and human trafficking

Desirable: 

– Experience in digital activism, in the non-profit sector
– A strategic thinker
– Confidence in statistical analysis to interpret key performance indicators
– Understanding of social algorithms, experience analysing social insights and applying learning
– Experience of campaigning online
– Experience of using WordPress and multiple digital platforms
– Good understanding of modern slavery and human trafficking in a global context
– Relevant network, including micro-influencers, organizations and channels
– Fluency in languages besides English, particularly Spanish, French or Italian

Key responsibilities:

– Engage with the Freedom United community on social channels, and by email, to build stronger affinity with supporters
– Draft clear written content for campaigns, news articles, and emails to mobilize and update supporters on developments
– Engage with and support community members regarding donating to Freedom United
– Outreach to prospective community members via Freedom United channels and third party platforms
– Building strong working relations with partner organisations, activists and influencers to reach new audiences
– Produce engaging graphics and video content for social channels
– Develop creative ideas for progressing campaigns through community engagement
– Monitor our key performance indicators and make recommendations that best serve the community
– Keeping updated on latest social trends, news on modern slavery and developments
– Support the implementation of campaigns led by other team members, including campaign actions and logistics such as public  petition deliveries and stunts
– Use digital tools to publish content, monitor and report on progress
– Follow best practices and organizational procedures, including record maintenance and processes, to help ensure quality of output and up to date systems
– Any other duties as may reasonably be required.
