Day 5: THANK YOUR LOCAL NON-PROFIT
On-the-ground organizations are the heart and soul of today’s anti-slavery movement. These non-profits or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) may work to prevent or intervene in situations of slavery or in support of survivors. They typically specialize in vital programs like community awareness, educational or economic empowerment, liberation methods, or physical & mental recovery.
Our field partner Challenging Heights is one such anti-trafficking non-profit that does it all. Watch this brief video overview of Challenging Heights’ work in Ghana and read about it in depth on their website. But you don’t have to write letters to Ghana to appreciate NGO staff.
Visit the Global Modern Slavery Directory to find an anti-trafficking non-profit near you. Let them know you appreciate their work by sending them a brief thank-you note and/or gift. Gift ideas include flowers, fruit baskets, slavery-free chocolates, or gift cards for fair trade goodies like coffee. (Be sure to inquire how many people work there so you don’t bust your budget or come up short!) As always, let us know you completed this challenge by entering your name.
Discuss in the comments section what kinds of “people power” these organizations need to be successful. Do you have skills that a local non-profit might find helpful? Consider volunteering or fundraising for your newfound “partners in crime-fighting!”
Don’t forget to let us know you will take action by clicking or tapping the ACCEPT CHALLENGE button on this page. If you missed any of our previous Freedom Fortnight challenges you can still take action here.
