DAY 7: CREATE A PIECE OF ART TO INSPIRE CHANGE

People are naturally drawn to beauty – so how do we keep them from instinctively turning away from the ugliness of modern slavery? Artworks for Freedom is an organization which responds by challenging people through public displays of photography, paintings and performing arts to inspire change.

Similarly, the Red Sand Project uses the striking image of red sand poured in the cracks in public sidewalks to help raise awareness of victims, who often “fall between the cracks” in society.  Art has the power to bypass intellectual barriers and move people to strong emotion.

Watch the Artworks for Freedom video above for ideas and inspiration.

Maybe you don’t think of yourself as an artist – or perhaps you are a creative professional. We all have the capacity for imagination and for creative expression. It’s our innate human ability to empathize with others and imagine a better world which makes a future free from human trafficking and modern slavery possible.

Today’s challenge is to apply that creativity and imagination to the problem of modern slavery. Create a piece of art to raise awareness. It doesn’t have to be something complicated or even permanent.

You could do a sidewalk chalk drawing, write a poem, such as a haiku, or paint a picture.

And, you could make something by yourself or invite friends or family to join with you to create something together.

Photograph your piece and share it with someone in person, via email or on social media using the hashtags #FreedomFortnight or #F14. Start a conversation with someone about the world you imagine – a world where everyone is free.

Discuss below how artists can represent the issue in a respectful way. Share ideas on how public art and performances can contribute to building motivation for change.

Don’t forget to let us know you will take action by clicking or tapping the ACCEPT CHALLENGE button on this page. If you missed any of our previous Freedom Fortnight challenges you can still take action here.

Chip in and help end modern slavery once and for all.

Have to admit that I just don’t feel I have the bandwidth to tackle this one at the moment… but I have participated in Red Sand Project in the past, and I wrote a blog entry about it. http://www.katenorlander.com/make-a-difference-participate-in-red-sand-project/
