DAY 11: SAY THANKS TO A COMPANY DOING GOOD WORK
Social entrepreneurship is a growing trend. These start-ups combine a big heart with a head for business, using the engine of commerce to drive positive change. Nowhere is that more needed than in the fight to end modern slavery and human trafficking.
While for most of us it prompts sweet memories of childhood, chocolate has a dark and troubling history of child slavery. Cocoa – 70% of which is sourced from West Africa – has often been produced by children working in hazardous conditions. Efforts to get large global chocolate companies to address the issue have met with mixed results.
Which is what makes Tony’s Chocolonely such a remarkable company. They don’t just want to make slave-free chocolate. They want to make slave-free chocolate the industry standard. They want to show the world that it’s possible to make slavery-free chocolate and be commercially successful.
Because they’re tackling such an audacious goal, today’s challenge for you is easy. Add your name to a letter thanking Tony’s Chocolonely for their effort to change their industry. Show this social enterprise some love for doing what they can to make a difference.
Extra Credit: It’s encouraging to see many social enterprises, businesses and corporations making preventing or stopping slavery a high priority. If you know of one, let them know it’s important to you and you’re thankful for their efforts and progress via letter, email or social media.
Discussion: Share some of your favorite companies who make ethical business practices a core part of their mission.
Don’t forget to let us know you will take action by clicking or tapping the ACCEPT CHALLENGE button on this page. If you missed any of our previous Freedom Fortnight challenges you can still take action here.
