Goal:
To demand immediate action by the Nigerian government to locate the girls abducted by Boko Haram and return them to their families.
Summary:
In April 2014, more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped by militant group Boko Haram; the girls were reported to be sold into modern slavery for as little as $12. Freedom United supporters urged the Nigerian government to act immediately and use every available resource to locate the girls and return them to their families. 94,920 activists sent a strong, united message to Nigeria’s President demanding action to free the girls.
Outcome:
In October 2016, Boko Haram released 21 school girls who had been abducted in Chibok in 2014. However, the group are reported to hold approximately 190 school girls. There are serious concerns that the girls are being forced into slavery and are being brainwashed to partake in Boko Haram’s practices and some of the men have even killed girls in their villages.
