Pledge to TURN BACK human trafficking in Ghana Now

The police command in Ghana has issued directives to their officers to screen vehicles at police checkpoints and barriers for potential victims of trafficking. This is great news, but we believe more people can be saved if each of us take a further step to report suspected cases of human trafficking in our neighbourhoods to the authorities.

Please help to TURN BACK human trafficking now by making a personal commitment to be vigilant and report concerns to the your community leaders or the police.

Kwesi ¹ was trafficked to Lake Volta to work as a “fisher boy” where he worked for an average of 18 hours per day with little rest, no pay and only enough food to give him the energy for more work. When he was found and rescued by Challenging Heights, he had suffered extensive emotional and physical abuse and partially lost sight in his left eye. Today, he is back in his community and attending school.

Over 21,000 children like Kwesi are trafficked and trapped in hazardous labor on Lake Volta in Ghana. ². We are working hard to bring them home, but want to ensure no one is trafficked in the first place. ³. ⁴. By taking this pledge, you will help fulfil Kwesi’s wish of letting the world know that no child should be sent into slavery.

Millions of people around the world are trafficked for forced labour and sexual exploitation, and Ghana has emerged as a source, transit and destination for this social evil. I believe that the recent concerns raised by the Parliament of Ghana over human trafficking point to the need for unified action against trafficking.

I hereby pledge to TURN BACK human trafficking by taking the following actions:

• I will be vigilant of suspicious movement of children and vulnerable people, victims of bonded labour and of children working when they should be in school.
• I promise to always report my concerns to the appropriate authorities as quickly as possible.
