This is the story about Anna, a young abolitionist. Her teacher at White River Valley High School in Switz City, Indiana, Denise Howell, facilitates a Leadership Class for juniors and seniors that includes a curriculum about human trafficking…

One of Mrs. Howell’s seniors, 18-year-old Anna Moreno, recently became an outspoken activist against human trafficking. She explained what moved her to action:

I saw on my Facebook page that a 14-year-old girl had been arrested for prostitution in a neighboring town. I was upset and frustrated. I’d learned in class that there is no such thing as a child prostitute, so I wondered if the girl might be a victim. I immediately contacted the authorities to explain my concerns. I told them that according to the law, a child under 18 could not be arrested for prostitution. I filled out police paperwork and am waiting to hear something back.

Howell’s students are making presentations not only to their peers, but to authorities, business owners, and religious leaders in order to raise community awareness about trafficking. “In the last semester, all my Leadership students have become passionate and informed abolitionists. They follow the news, keep a watchful eye out in their community, and proudly wear their #NoSlavery T-shirts.  When they go out to speak, they are usually invited to present to a couple more groups.  What I think is so amazing is that these are high school students effectively teaching adults about a major world issue!”

End Crowd commends Anna for her courage and boldness.  Our thanks to Mrs. Howell for her efforts to raise up young leaders. With millions of people in our world entrapped in human trafficking, it will take advocates like Anna who are committed to take the time to inform themselves and others. Let us all learn from Anna and her classmates to report suspicious behavior, advocate for victims, and support the individuals and organizations around the globe who are fighting to raise awareness and put an end to slavery.
