Human trafficking myths are discussed in this article.  The issue is very complex. The article explains that it’s kept under wraps and often ignored.  There are not many reliable studies to measure it, therefore it’s not easy to separate fact from fiction…

The author says that it’s important to dispel some of the human trafficking myths as we are in the midst of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

MYTH #1: Many think that trafficking only occurs in countries in other parts of the world.

FACT: It actually is happening right here in the U.S. There were over 16,000 calls for help last year to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center.

MYTH #2: Do you think that only women are victims?

FACT: You may be surprised to learn that 45% of the victims are men and boys. That’s taking into account force labor and sex trafficking.

MYTH #3: Human trafficking requires physical force.

FACT:  There are many kinds of tactics to coerce victims such as family threats, mental abuse, debt bondage, etc.

MYTH #4: Trafficking is a small, underground industry.

FACT: It is estimated that 20+ million are victims around the world.

MYTH #5: There is nothing I can do to help combat slavery.

FACT: On the contrary; each person can do something to join the Movement–volunteer, donate, get informed, learn how you may unknowingly be supporting slavery.  Everyone can take action to end human trafficking by taking the slavery footprint questionnaire. You can make a change.

Human trafficking is all too real and more pervasive than most people understand. Each of us has a role to play in combatting this lucrative criminal enterprise. Learn. Share. Take Action. Working together we can get another step closer to a world where this modern-day slavery is vanquished.
